A tremendous Diver representation
I am a watch guy. A Seiko fan. The SNZF71J1 marks my third Seiko...and my second “5”. My Grandfather gave me my first one in the late 80’s and it still has a heartbeat, also never been serviced. Sometime in ‘16 I became hellbent on wrapping a Diver around my wrist. So I settled in and searched. It took me this long because I refuse to have more than 3 at a time in my Watch box. I’ve broken this rule many times, but always come back to it. The day after I bought this “5” I bought the Citizen Blue Angels AT8020-03L Chronograph from another online store out of Brooklyn, NY. Less than 24hr later it was on a UPS truck back to Brooklyn. My 36 year old eyes could not see around all that beautiful clutter to tell the time as quick as I prefer. Point being, watch guys nitpick. People that just wear them, in my opinion, will wear anything on their wrists, feet or head. I enjoy being a watch guy. I enjoy nitpicking at the slightest of details. And why not? It’s my hard earned money I’m choosing to part with for a product that is the epitome of, “...value is not Cost. Price does not determine Value. We consumer’s place value on a product...and so on.” I’d love to own a Grand Seiko, and the value seems to me worth the price but only because I’m a watch guy. It didn’t cost 10k to make that GS Diver. They’re competing in a niche market. I’ve really digressed. This is all coming full circle. For JUST $200.00 and shipping you get a tremendous example of what a watch should be. It’s not a real Diver and I don’t care. While it’s most certainly manufactured, I chose to order the J1 because it makes me feel that it was crafted in Japan, although manufactured there in truth. That is opposed to being manufactured in Malaysia. Still, the J1 was born in Japan and that means something to me. It only took a week to get to Charlotte, North Carolina from outside of Tokyo. I even contacted the site concerning how the tracking of shipping worked and received an extremely nice reply. No pip on the bezel. No screw down. 100M only. That’s ok. It’s not a Diver. It’s a representation. A great Representation. And practically perfect. Almost. I knew this before buying. I knew this while doing my research. “SPORTS”. Why? It does not kill the Watch. It does not cheapen it...it most certainly wounds. It could’ve still been a sports watch without stating “Sports”. I could’ve still went swimming, played soccer, rode a mountain bike up a hill. And that’s the catch. Seiko made that decision. I’m nitpicking. I’m overthinking. However, a fact remains. The SNZF71J1 costs $200 and at that price the value your no doubt getting in return makes this Watch a steal if you like the look of a Diver. BUT...I would have paid, let’s just say, $600 for this exact Watch without those 6 letters. If Seiko would’ve given the option for one to say “Sports” and one to not I’d say a solid 95% would’ve chosen a stand-alone simple “Seiko 5” logo.
